27A: Reading Reflection No. 3

The book I read was How to Fail at Almost Anything and Still Win Big by Scott Adams. This book was a breakthrough in my mind because of how it tackles the concept of failure and how to rise above it. As college students, we refuse to be discouraged easily and keep our eye on the prize. In reality, college is a big adjustment, and learning how to accept failure and move forward is an even biggest adjustment. We come to realize that failure is a part of the human experience, which Adams discusses heavily in his book.

For a class assignment, I would ask students to interview 3 people they think are very successful in their respective field (does not have to be business-related) and ask questions about their viewpoint on failure and what they felt was their biggest failure and how they overcame it.

  1. Hi Anisha! This book sounds like a really good read. I think it is so important that we take away lessons from our failures in life and turn them in to something positive rather than letting our failures keep us from trying to achieve what it is we want in life. College is definitely a good time for us to learn this lesson as we will face failure many, many times throughout our college experience as we learn and grow. Good job!

  2. Hi Anisha,
Like you said, this book seems like a really helpful read for young college students struggling with failure in a new way. You chose a great read for this week's topics of failure, and it seems like the author of the book has the same approach to failure as Professor Pryor. Your suggested exercise sounds perfect for this class, and I think it would really give a lot of us students insight on failure in the "real world". Great job!

  3. Hey Anisha, I had considered reading this book because I had heard a lot about Scott Adams because of Dilbert and his rather contentious political commentary. I think this book relates well to Assignment 26 Celebrating Failure. I think learning to accept failure and learn from it without putting yourself down is something that should be promoted better in schools.
