6A: Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

Economic Opportunity #1: Coronavirus Disrupts Prescription Supplies

This article discuss the worries of every American person who relies on prescription drugs to continue their day-to-day activities. But, because of COVID-19, the high demand of some of these drugs has caused many large pharmacies to run out quickly, leaving many people fearing that they may not have a chance for a refill. I believe an opportunity exists for people who rely heavily on prescription drugs and are concerned about not being able find a refill. This opportunity is difficult to exploit because people are worried about the quick run-out of certain prescription drugs and with the development of COVID-19 tests, things may return to normal.

Why did I see the opportunity: I saw this opportunity because I have personally seen this affect my family, as my grandfather was told by his pharmacist that they ran out of his prescription drug that he needed and was referred to a different pharmacy to fulfill his needs.

Economic Opportunity #2: Thinking about Flying? Here's what you need to know

Since traveling dropped drastically in the peak of March, many airplane companies are inching to get back to their normal schedules and revenue amounts. Because of COVID-19, ticket prices are much lower than normal, with many people still being wary of traveling and putting themselves at risk. The customer with the opportunity is people who are taking advantage of these low airfare prices. This opportunity would be difficult to exploit because many people are still taking caution and avoiding travel for the rest of summer, which is suppose to be the peak of travel companies' revenue.

Why did I see the opportunity: This summer, I was hoping to travel out of the country for a little. Due to  COVID-19, the experience and pricing of traveling this summer, or after, will change drastically.

Regulatory Opportunity #1: Texas and Florida gyms reopen with more sanitizer

This article discusses how gyms are being proactive to keeping gym users safe, such as checking temperatures and more effective sanitizers as they are meeting new health standards. Gyms, such as Planet Fitness, and other popular gym names and gym users are prototypical customers because these health regulations will not stop once the pandemic is over. This opportunity is easy to exploit because this pandemic has opened us to many new health regulations that will be around for a while, and the various ways to keep gym users safe, similarly to what was listed in the article.

Why did I see the opportunity: As an avid gym user, I saw many people elect out of wiping down the equipment after using it, which helped spread germs faster. I believe these regulations will help people understand the importance of keeping the equipment clean after you use them, especially after a pandemic like this.

Regulatory Opportunity #2: Disney World is reopening, but you won't be able to hug Mickey

This article discusses a new plan Walt Disney World will be implementing for a while, regarding the safe practices as every returns to somewhat normalcy. The prototypical customer for this opportunity is anyone who enjoys going to Walt Disney World, or any theme park for this matter, as they plan for rigorous health regulations as this pandemic stays. This opportunity would be easy to exploit because this situation is becoming normal everywhere around the globe and is beginning to look like it will be around for them next year, or until a vaccine is found.

Why did I see the opportunity: I enjoy going to theme parks, so this is big change in the experience of the theme park. And since tourism makes up a large portion of Florida's revenue, people will try to do anything to bring back that amount of revenue to make up for losses from the past two months.

  1. Hey Anisha,
I also wrote about the airline industry as one of my problems, though I mostly focused on tourism. It does seem that the airlines are starting to have some of their passenger load return slowly. One of my friends was planning to study abroad this semester, there are a lot of people who's plans were messed up by the pandemic. It will be interesting to see what happens as the number of passengers continues to increase.

  2. Hi Anisha,
The opportunities you identified are really good and I think you did the assignment well! I was especially interested in the last opportunity about Disney, since I actually work in a theme park.
I usually interact with guests frequently, and our typical activities don't adhere to the current social distancing guidelines. I enjoyed learning about Disney's policies because it gave me some insight on how the theme park I work at might run when we reopen. Stay safe and healthy!
