2A: Bug List

Issues that Bug Me:
  1. When motion detectors don't work when opening doors. I have to get really close to the door to the point where I could just open them myself.
    • Why? The motion sensor must not have a big range to sense movement.
  2. When my water bottle leaks.
    • Why? I may not have closed the water bottle all the way.
  3. Calling customer service for some product and going through all the steps just for an automated voice message to tell me that no one is available to answer my call.
    • Why? There is no one working at that time or they are very busy.
  4. Paying for tolls on Turnpike in Orlando.
    • Why? They use the money to build proper infrastructure for the roads and cities.
  5. When my phone charger in my car breaks.
    • Why? I bend the cord a lot so the outside covering rips. Or the material is cheap.
  6. Drinking anything out of a paper straw in Gainesville.
    • Why? Although it’s environmentally-friendly, the paper gets wet and soggy because of the liquid and bends the straw, which causes me to hate my life.
  7. When I turn on the hot water in the shower and the water isn't hot immediately.
    • Why? The water heater takes a few minutes for the shower water to cycle through and heat it up.
  8. When someone does something for me, but they don’t do it right the first time so I end up having to do it myself.
    • Why? They probably didn’t have the same vision I had for the thing or didn’t understand how I wanted the job done. “If you want something some right, you got to do it yourself.”
  9. When I am tracking a bus on the RTS app and it never updates so I'm either 10 minutes early to catch the bus or I just miss it by 30 seconds.
    • Why? This may happen because of some signal interference between the moving buses and the app.
  10. The Starbucks by Celebration Pointe is always busy in the drive thru line.
    • Why? It may be due to something happening in the store, like restocking items or an espresso machine broke down.
  11. When my bluetooth headphones don't connect to my phone when I'm listening to music.
    • Why? Similarly, with the RTS app, signal interference, or I’m in a place where the connection is not strong.
  12.  Being stuck in traffic at the intersection on 34th and Archer.
    • Why? It’s a big intersection and I’m probably driving during rush hour when everyone is trying to go home or Butler Plaza to buy groceries.
  13.  When I can hear the music or conversations of the people who live in the apartment above me.
    • Why? They have wood floors so the noise travels easily compared to carpet flooring. Also they throw parties and make noise a lot.
  14. Netflix (or any media services) doesn’t have a large selection of movies.
    • Why? It takes them a long time to get the rights to upload the movie to their media services.
  15. Spending 20 minutes to find parking on campus.
    • Why? Parking is far from the places I typically go to on campus and everyone else parks there because of location.
  16. Advertisements on my social media pages that are of no interest to me.
    • Why? That’s a way for the social media page to make money by boosting the advertisements.
  17. When Amazon deliveries are delayed when they are known for fast shipping.
    • Why? There are external circumstances that delay shipping that they cannot control.
  18. When people get mad at me about policies that are out of my control at my job.
    • Why? It’s not my fault, but I still have to listen to it to provide good customer service even though I don’t make the rules and it’s even worse when I try to explain why we have that policy and people don’t try to understand it.
  19. When people go to an express checkout with way more than 10 items.
    • Why? They think it will be faster, but it’s not because they have so many items.
  20. When I’m at the gym and people don’t wipe down the machines when they are done using them.
    • Why? People are lazy, and love to spread germs.
Reflection: I found it difficult to come up with the list of 20 items that bother me all the time. I realized it's hard to think of the problem when it isn't hindering me in the present moment. I only think it's a bother for a moment of my day and move on, it's never a constant bother. Also, I've realized some people are just terrible.

  1. You have put together a great and entertaining list of “bugs.” I am very impressed at how well your “bugs” were able to vividly illustrate your daily life, furthermore, how relatable these “bugs” felt to my everyday life as well. I got a good laugh at the “drinking anything out of a paper straw,” this is the type of everyday realism that I wish I incorporated more into my own list. In terms of improvements, I would recommend avoiding “bugs” that are a result of people acting against what is considerate and socially responsible. Believe me when I say that I have felt them too, and coming from the restaurant industry… I can tell those kinds of stories about people for days. However, it is more productive to find “bugs” that are universal and whose “whys” can be resolved through designing a plausible solution rather than highlighting the inconsiderate characteristics in people. I did, truly, enjoy reading your “bugs,” your point of view is very intriguing.

  2. Hi! I enjoyed reading your bug list. I especially resonated with your last one about people not wiping down the machines at the gym. This is something that bothers me so much, but only in the moment as well. As difficult as it is to come up with something you can improve on, maybe you can just add more! I relate to a lot of these, so I'm interested in seeing what more you have to offer.

  3. Hey, I found your bug list enjoyable to read through. I seriously relate to the toll roads in Orlando, drove there a few months back to visit some friends at UCF and was extremely bugged by it. I also have had similar problems with my bluetooth earbuds not connecting, but it was less of a connection issue and more of not having read the manual that came with them for me. I had a similar realization on how many small annoyances I do not think about when they aren't currently pestering me.

  4. Hi Anisha,
I think your bug list was really good and clearly well thought out. I totally related to a lot of your bugs, especially the one about paper straws and the RTS bus app. Though I enjoy living in Gainesville, remembering those bugs made me really appreciate being at home! I agree that the list was pretty hard to come up with when I wasn't actually experiencing the bugs. I also realized that a lot of daily problems we have are caused by other people.I think you did a great job with your list, and I hope you have a good day!
